Are CDL Practice Tests Accurate? How to Check One

A CDL practice test can be accurate as a study tool, but it is not your state's permit test. A good one teaches the same material your state's manual teaches, in the same style, and tells you why each answer is right.

A practice test is not the permit test

Your state gives the permit test. Your state also sets how many questions it has and the passing score. Federal rule 49 CFR 383.135 sets the minimum: you must correctly answer at least 80 percent of the questions on each knowledge test. Look up your state's time limit in its manual or on its licensing page.

So be careful with any site that promises the exact test. Use a practice test to learn the material, not to guess the questions.

What a good practice test is built from

The CDL manual is the study guide. The manual says: "To get a CDL, you must pass knowledge and skills tests. This manual will help you pass the tests."

Your state publishes its own manual and may add its own sections and rules. That is the one to check a practice test against.

Step by step

  1. Get your state's manual. Find the CDL manual on your state licensing agency's website. Note the edition date on it.
  2. Find your test details. Look in your state's manual or on its licensing page for the number of questions, the time limit and the passing score for each test you need. Do not assume they match another state. The guide on how many questions are on the CDL test shows one state's list.
  3. Take one practice test cold. Open it and check the table above. Does it cite the manual? Does it explain answers?
  4. Pick five answers and verify them. Open your manual. Find the line behind each answer. If a practice test says something your manual does not, believe your manual.
  5. Read every wrong answer. Go back to the manual page. Do not just memorize the letter.
  6. Time yourself. Once you know the material, practice with your state's time limit so the clock is not a surprise.

Watch for outdated rules

The CDL manual gets new editions. The manual Massachusetts posts is a July 2014 edition. Virginia DMV posts a manual file dated July 2026. If a practice test was written from an old manual, some of its facts may be old.

Look for the edition date on the practice test or the manual it names. If you cannot find one, you cannot tell how current it is. Where your state's current manual and a practice test disagree, follow the manual. Ask your state licensing office if the manual itself is unclear.

Why the clock and the count matter

Practice at full length, not just in short bursts. The Massachusetts manual lists the General Knowledge test at 50 questions and one hour. Connecticut and Washington also list 50 questions and 40 to pass for General Knowledge. Your state may differ on any number, so check it first.

Short tests are good for learning. Full-length timed tests tell you whether you can finish on time.

Common questions

Are CDL practice tests the same as my state's permit test?

No. A practice test is a study tool. Your state gives the permit test and sets its number of questions and its passing score. Federal rules set the minimum passing score, 80 percent on each knowledge test. Check your state's CDL manual.

How do I know if a CDL practice test is accurate?

Check that it is built from the official CDL manual, that it cites the manual section, that it explains each answer, and that the count and time match your state's manual. Be careful with any site that says it has the exact test.

Can a practice test be out of date?

Yes. The CDL manual is updated, and some of its rules change. Look for the edition date on your state's manual and compare it to what the practice test teaches. When they disagree, the current state manual wins.
