Our method
Are CDL practice tests accurate? How we check ours.
A practice test is only worth taking if its answers are right. Every question here is written from the official CDL manual, answered blind by a second reviewer, and shown only after it passes.
The rule
No question goes live until it has been checked. A wrong answer on a safety test is a failure on our part, so we would rather ship fewer questions than a wrong one.
The checks, in order
- Write. We draft each question from one section of the official CDL manual at a time. We use AI tools to help draft. We record the manual section, and the exact manual sentence the question rests on, in our own records.
- Blind answer. A second, independent reviewer answers the question without seeing our answer key, using only the manual text. If the two answers do not match, the question is rejected and rewritten. If it cannot be settled from the manual, it is dropped.
- Fact and clarity check. A separate check reviews the question, the right answer and every explanation for facts and plain wording.
- Publish. Each question has a status: draft, verified or live. Only verified and live questions are ever shown to drivers. Drafts stay hidden.
How we write
- Original wording. We never copy questions from a DMV, other prep sites or apps. We paraphrase the manual and never reproduce long passages of it.
- One clearly correct answer. No trick wording and no double negatives.
- Wrong options are real mistakes drivers make, not jokes.
- Numbers like pressures, distances and seconds match the manual.
- Plain English for a 6th to 8th grade reader, with short questions.
- Every answer is explained: why the right answer is right, why each wrong one is wrong, and which part of the manual it comes from.
What we cannot promise
We do not have the real test questions. Nobody outside your state's testing agency does, and we would not use them if we did. Our questions are exam-style questions built from the official CDL manual. They cover the same material in the same format, but they are not actual test questions.
Manuals also differ. A few numbers change between manual editions or between states. For example, the current model manual says the low air pressure warning comes on before tank pressure falls below 55 psi, while some older manuals print 60 psi. When you test, your own state's current manual is the final word. Our facts link to their sources.
Common questions
Do you use the real CDL test questions?
No. The real questions are not published, and we never copy questions from a DMV, other prep sites or apps. We write original questions about the same material.
Are the questions written by AI?
We use AI tools to draft questions from one manual section at a time. A second, independent reviewer then answers each one without seeing our answer, and a separate check reviews the facts and wording. Nothing is shown to drivers until it passes.
What happens if the two answers do not match?
The question is rejected and rewritten. A question that cannot be settled from the manual is dropped.
What if my state's manual is different?
The topics come from a national model manual, so they match in most places. A few numbers differ by state or manual edition. Always check your own state's manual for the exact numbers.
