CDL Permit Test Online? What States Say and How to Practice
In the states we checked, no. You take the CDL knowledge test at a state office, not at home. Each state sets where its test is given, so check yours, then practice online before you go.
What federal rules say
The federal rule on test methods is 49 CFR 383.133. It says knowledge tests "may be administered in written form, verbally, or in automated format." It can be given in a foreign language, but only if no interpreter is used.
The rule covers the format. It does not say where you sit for it. That choice is your state's.
The federal minimum passing score is 80 percent correct on each knowledge test (49 CFR 383.135). Your state sets the number of questions.
What five states say
We read these state sites. They are examples, not a full list. If your state is not here, we have no official source for it, so check its licensing site.
| State | What the official page shows |
|---|---|
| Massachusetts | Commercial testing is not available remotely, only at RMV Service Centers. |
| New York | Permit tests are given at DMV offices only. |
| North Carolina | CDL knowledge tests are taken at a driver license office. |
| Ohio | Knowledge tests are taken in person at a driver exam station. |
| Oregon | The DMV offers Class C and motorcycle knowledge testing online. CDL tests are not listed. |
Some steps are online. In Ohio, renewal (if under 65) and self-certification can be done online, but not the knowledge tests.
Where to practice online
A practice test does not count toward your permit. It shows you what you do not know yet.
- Get your state's manual first. Texas DPS, for one, says updated study materials and the Texas Commercial Motor Vehicle Driver's Handbook are free on its website. Check your state's site before you pay for a manual.
- Read a section, then test that section. Do the general knowledge questions first. Add air brakes, combination vehicles or other endorsement tests only if you need them.
- Use exam-style questions built from the official manual. The questions should match the manual's wording and numbers. Skip any site that promises the exact test.
- Read every wrong answer. Go back to the manual page and find the line. Do not just memorize the letter.
- Retake missed topics the next day. If you miss the same number twice, write it on a card.
- Check your state's own tools. Iowa has a CDL test app with 600+ practice questions, and a web version. Nebraska has an online practice test for the general knowledge exam.
The federal rule says a state must use a different version of the test when you retake one you failed. Memorizing one set of answers will not carry you.

Common questions
Can I take the CDL permit test online at home?
Federal rules say a state may give knowledge tests in written form, verbally, or in an automated format. They do not say where. Each state decides. Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina and Ohio say the test is taken at an office, service center or exam station. Check your own state's licensing site.
Where can I practice for the CDL permit test online?
Use exam-style practice tests built from your state's official CDL manual. Some states also post their own practice tools. Iowa has a CDL test app with 600+ practice questions, and a web version. Nebraska has an online practice test for the general knowledge exam.
Does an online practice test count as the permit test?
No. A practice test is only for study. The official test is given by your state, and your state decides the number of questions and the passing score. The federal minimum passing score is 80 percent.
