CDL Practice Test Apps: How to Pick One (Oct 2026)
The best CDL practice test is one that matches your state's manual, shows the manual reference, and explains wrong answers. Several apps and sites do some of this, and the free official manual is where every test should start.
We read each product's own page on October 8, 2026. Prices and features change, so check the page before you pay. We do not rank them, and we leave out ratings and download counts because they change every day.

How to judge any practice test yourself
Run through this list before you spend money or hours.
- Does it cite the manual? Each answer should point to a section you can find in your state's manual.
- Does it explain wrong answers? You learn more from why you missed it than from the right letter.
- Does it match your state? Your state sets the number of questions and the passing score. See how many questions are on the CDL test.
- Does it have your test types? General Knowledge is the base. Air brakes, combination vehicles and endorsements come next.
- Is the price clear? Look for monthly, annual or one-time. Find out what happens after the first period.
- Do you need an account? Some tools need a login. Some do not.
- Does it work on your phone? Try a few questions first.
- Does it make you re-do what you missed? Going back over weak topics gives you more than new questions.
Try the free part first. If it fails two or three of these checks, move on.
Use the manual as your answer key
Your state's manual is the place to check any practice question. When a question confuses you, open the manual and read the section. If the app and the manual disagree, trust the manual and your state's licensing site.

Common questions
Do I have to pay for a CDL practice test app?
No. The official state CDL manual is free to read, and several sites and apps below have free practice tests. Paid plans add features such as more questions or video. Read the price terms before you buy, because some are subscriptions.
Can a practice app tell me the exact questions on my state test?
No. Your state writes and gives the test, and it sets the number of questions and the passing score. A practice test is for study. Use your state's CDL manual as the final check.
What should I look for in a CDL practice test?
Look for a manual reference on each answer, an explanation for wrong answers, the test types you need, and clear prices. The checklist in this guide has the full list.
