Failed CDL Road Test: Wait Times by State and Next Steps

A failed CDL road test is common. Most states let you retest after a short wait, from a few days to a few weeks, and you pay again. FirstTry CDL put the wait times we could confirm from official pages below, plus a 7-day plan for the next try.

Retake rules we could confirm

These come from state pages and rules we read in October 2026. If your state is not here, call your licensing office. Rules change, and a state may not publish the number at all.

StateWait after a failFee or limit published
Arkansas5 daysFail on 3 separate dates and you pay a new $50 application
District of Columbia3 calendar days. After a second fail, at least 90 calendar daysFee for every road test, pass or fail
Georgia2 days for the 1st fail and later fails$50 for each attempt
New JerseyAt least 2 weeks. After several fails, the MVC may require 6 monthsNot published for the road test
TexasNot published3 examinations of each part per paid fee, then a new application and fee
UtahNot published$78 for two attempts, $52 for retakes
Washington3 days. No wait if the test vehicle had an equipment failureFee for a new examiner. No fee for the next try after equipment failure

Two things stand out. The wait can be long in some places, so book the retest the day you fail. And a state can reset your attempts, so count yours.

What now: your next 7 days

  1. Day 1: Get the score sheet. Ask the examiner what you missed. Write it down in your own words before you leave the lot. You are asking for a list, not an argument.
  2. Day 1: Ask three questions. Do I redo all three parts or only the part I failed? How soon can I rebook? What truck will I get? Washington, for one, says earlier scores do not transfer when you retest.
  3. Day 1: Book the retest. Pick the first date past your state's wait. A booked date gives you a deadline, and a deadline gets you in the yard.
  4. Days 2 and 3: Fix the one thing that failed you. If you failed the pre-trip, practice only the pre-trip. If you failed backing, set up cones and do only backing. Do not rework what you passed.
  5. Days 2 to 5: Say every step out loud. Do the pre-trip as if the examiner is there. The Virginia manual says you must name, point to or touch, and fully explain each item or you get no credit for it. Silence costs points.
  6. Days 3 to 6: Book yard time in the same kind of truck. Ask the school or employer which truck the test site uses, then practice in that type. Automatic or manual, air brakes or not, it changes your license restrictions under 49 CFR 383.135(b). See our CDL road test guide.
  7. Day 6: Run the air brake check cold. Do it from memory, all four parts, with a friend reading your steps back. Use our air brake pre-trip script.
  8. Day 7: Rest, then check your paperwork. Check that your CLP has not run out (one year from issue under 49 CFR 383.25(c)) and that your training record is on file. Our ELDT guide explains training. Each retest costs time and money, so one calm prep week is cheaper than a second fee.

Common auto-fail items

An automatic fail ends the test or that part of it. The federal rule, 49 CFR 383.135(b)(2), says an applicant who does not obey traffic laws, causes an accident during the test, or commits any other offense listed as an automatic fail in the driver and examiner manuals must fail. The Virginia CDL manual (2026 edition) lists these:

  • Not following instructions. The examiner may stop the test. If you do not understand, ask.
  • An unsafe act. The manual gives forgetting the parking brake as an example.
  • Opening the door while the vehicle moves. The manual says this may be an automatic fail.
  • Not exiting or entering safely. You set the parking brake, put the truck in neutral or park, face the truck, and keep three points of contact.
  • A partial air brake check. The manual says failing to explain and perform all four parts of the air brake check means an automatic fail on the inspection part.
  • A wrong hydraulic brake check, if your truck has hydraulic brakes.
  • Ending a backing exercise outside the final boundaries. The manual says you will be penalized and fail basic control.
  • An accident or moving violation on the road. The manual says you must finish the road test without either, wearing your seat belt.

"May result in" is the manual's wording, so the examiner has some room. Do not count on it. Treat each item as a hard stop.

The federal skills list is in 49 CFR 383.113: inspection, basic control, and on-road driving. Each state's examiner manual sets the scoring.

Common questions

How many times can I fail the CDL road test?

Federal rules set no number. It depends on your state. Texas Transportation Code 522.023 gives you three examinations of each element once you pay the fee, then you need a new application and fee. New Jersey says that after several fails the MVC may make you wait six months.

Do I have to wait before I retake the CDL road test?

Usually yes, and the wait is set by the state. New Jersey says at least two weeks. Washington says 3 days. Georgia says two days for the first failure and later ones. Washington waives the wait if the test vehicle had an equipment failure.

Does a failed road test reset my permit or my training?

No federal rule resets them when you fail. Your CLP is valid for no more than one year from issue under 49 CFR 383.25(c). Entry-level driver training does not expire, but 49 CFR 380.603(c)(3) says the theory and behind-the-wheel parts must be done within one year of the first part. Washington adds that if your CLP expires before you pass all three parts, you retake the parts you passed.
